Lindsey told us all the story of White Elephant gives - a king in Persia or somewhere, when someone made him mad - gave them a white elephant. They couldn't get rid of it and it costs a lot to maintain so it usually ruined them financially! So 'white elephant' became a gift that is not much good, can't be used and something that is more a burden than a gift!
